Plug off electrical appliances during thunder

Why we need to plug off all electrical appliances during thunder? Why its not sufficient of turning off switch alone?Since switch is off, how come the current can pass, because the circuit is open?

Well, good questions those are. For all electrical wiring and electrical socket point we have both phase and neutral. The switch only acts over the gateway of phase line and not for the neutral line.

Now, nobody cant predicate where would the actual thunder fall on ground, but always prefers to fall on objects which easily conducts. In this case, if these high volts of thunder (10 Croce volt-30 Croce volt) falls on the transformers which supplies current to your home/office , it will be carried out to all lines of supply of transformers, and it will enter into all your appliances of the home connected to the transformers.

Now if the current comes via phase line, well and good, you are saved because the switch is off. But if comes via neutral line, which doesn’t have any hindrance it will easily affects all parts of your electrical appliances.

So it’s always a good practice to ensure the plug off for all electrical appliances of your home.🙂
